Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)

These are nationally recognised qualifications that demonstrate the holder's competence to do a job to a national standard. An SVQ is a practically based qualification which assesses skills.

Who are they suitable for?

  • Those that have already gained employment and knowledge and wish to achieve a qualification that demonstrates competence in the work place
  • Those undertaking an Apprenticeship with an SVQ requirement

How do you get one?

  • A student registers with an IMI Awards approved centre and is observed and assessed doing their job in the workplace whilst their knowledge is assessed on-line
  • A portfolio of evidence is gathered at work, while carrying out operations and tasks
  • Most students undertaking an SVQ will also attend an IMI Awards Approved Centre on a day release basis, to learn underpinning knowledge to do the job and for on-line testing
  • Typically completed in 2 years for a Level 2 and in 3 years for a Level 3
