Level 2 National Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Motorsport) (VRQ)

Qual Ref: 100/5582/4 (MS)

This is a flexible qualification fundamentally designed for young students, ideally those on an ASL Apprenticeship scheme.  It suits both lower level students, who discover the motor vehicle environment is one that they can flourish in, and for those ‘Young Engineers’ with potential.

(The IMI Awards National at Level 3 is also a bridging qualification, that allows people wishing to progress to Master Technician (workshop technical manager level) or into higher education to a BSc or Beng.)

The IMI Awards National provides individuals a broad breadth of learning within four Applied Units, where the criteria is contextualised for the retail motor industry. The Applied Units include the following:
• Vehicle Science
• Vehicle Maths
• ICT for Vehicle Repair
• And one optional unit;
mechanical students complete Vehicle Electrical & Electronics

A key aspect of the IMI Awards National qualifications is their close relationship to Key Skills.

The vocational aspect of the IMI Awards National is the Technical Units which include the diagnosis of non-complex system faults. These units provide essential knowledge for the specialist group of competition maintenance and repair technicians.

It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:
• Carrying Out Routine Motorsport Vehicle Maintenance
• Removing and Replacing:
   - Engine units and components
   - Electrical auxiliary units and components
   - Chassis units and components

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working on competition vehicles.

The student’s knowledge is assessed by IMI Awards set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, IMI Awards set assignments, IMI Awards set ‘on-line’ multiple-choice testing, and by assessments set by the student’s centre.
