These qualifications are the first of their kind to address hybrid electric vehicles’ technologies. They are required to ensure the safety of technicians working on high voltage hybrid vehicles.
These qualifications were developed as the result of the demand from hybrid vehicle manufacturers for a qualification for their technicians. IMI Awards, IMI Automotive Skills SSC and manufacturers have developed these qualifications collaboratively.
Both qualifications can be taken as standalone qualifications, as part of the technical training offered by vehicle hybrid vehicle manufacturers. They may also be offered by FE colleges and private training providers if they have the correct resources.
In addition, these qualifications provide knowledge and skills essential for members of the emergency services, who may attend an accident involving a high voltage hybrid vehicle.
This qualification:
Level 2 Award in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Operation and Maintenance (QCF) QCA I.D NO: 500/7055/1
This Award is designed for technicians who maintain and repair hybrid technology vehicles, but not the hybrid system itself. It contains the knowledge required to work safely around a vehicle's hybrid system, whilst carrying out repairs or maintenance. This knowledge is tested via a multiple-choice test.
Therefore on completing this ‘single unit’ qualification, technicians will have gained both knowledge of high voltage hybrid technologies and an understanding of their dangers.
Progression:
Level 3 Award in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Repair and Replacement (QCF) QCA I.D NO: 500/7150/6
This Award is designed for technicians who maintain hybrid vehicles and the hybrid system itself. It contains the knowledge and skills required to work safely in and around the vehicle's hybrid system. The knowledge is tested via a multiple choice test, and the skills via oral questioning and a practical assessment.
On completion of this qualification (containing two units), technicians will be able to practically demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required for repairing vehicles with high voltage hybrid technologies.
