The Adult Literacy standards cover the ability to:

• Speak, listen and respond
• Read and comprehend
• Write to communicate

This Level 1 Certificate in Adult Literacy is assessed entirely by a national test set externally by QCA.

The test for this certificate is the same as the test used for key skill communication at Level 1. 
The test is one hour duration and consists of 40 multiple choice questions.

Successful completion of this test provides exemption from the test component of the equivalent key skill
(communication at Level 1).  Therefore this provides a progression opportunity for learners, who can then
go on to build a portfolio to complete this key skill.
